Having two young daughter the Disney franchise has played a rather large part of my life since their early years. I've always been a fan of the super clean colourful art they kick out year after year. Beauty and the beast is a beautiful animation and at precisely 25 years old it stands the test of time. Having recently purchased an ipad pro and the amazing ipad app Procreate it's made my ability to draw that little more accessible.
The finished Belle sketch above is not as clean as Disney's version I wanted to create a very simple sketch but offer a slight addition of lighting and shadow to give it some more depth. All in this was probably about two hours work and I always see room for improvement but sometimes a little rough gives it more character.
Being a dad of two young girls Disney Movies have become part of my life and have to admit I've watched Frozen a few too many times, although I have to confess it's a guilty pleasure! The art of Frozen is beautiful and the character design is amazing, leading on from films like tangled, another favourite of mine. Here's a quick tutorial using Procreate for ipad and apple pencil. I changed the skin tones a little way through and used soft light and overlay blend mode to get some of the skin shades that much better.
I sketched a quick outline first, then add final lines using the studio pen tool. I make use of the layers to add new colours such as skin tones (set to Multiply this allows the line work to show through underneath.
Reference taken from @lazydaylingerie on instagram I like the skin tones of this piece and thought I'd give it a go. Prob about 1.5hrs all in using Procreate and iPad Pro. The original is black and white but thought I'd try a colour version adding some highlights and colour to the skin using some of Procreates layer blending modes.
After posting my He-man sketch in my previous post I was contacted by one of my followers on facebook who requested a bespoke SHE-RA sketch in the same style. I started with some loose sketching using sketchbook pro then onto Procreate with the chosen drawing. I even added some blood and battle scars to make it more interesting.
Being an 80's child brings back fond memories, lying in bed on a Saturday morning watching the cartoons with my brothers. Such classics as: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987-1996), He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe (1983-85), DuckTales (1987-1990), ThunderCats (1985 – 1989), The Real Ghostbusters (1986 -1991), Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers (1989 - 1990). All watched on our (not so little) 15inch CRT TV screen that dominated the corner of the bedroom. I thought I'd give he-man a go with my new ipad pro using procreate app to sketch and colour. See the video below for the walkthrough and staged pictures below.
We made our debut this weekend at the MK Vintage and Handmade Market. Our first proper showcase. We met some great people and am pleased to say it was well organised by Jen at www.mk-handmade-and-vintage.co.uk and a busy weekend.
We had some cool new vinyl banners created and showcased a range of older and new prints along with a range of my original sketches which caught a lot of attention. I even sold my sketch of Heath Ledger as the Joker in Batman as a wedding present for a ladies upcoming wedding.
Took delivery of some lush christmas card designs last week. Featuring 4 designs from my minis range, including Batman, Superman, Spider-man and of course the main superhero of all Santa!! Printed on Beautifully white, textured 300gsm Italian Nettuno paper and a rather fitting bright red envelope. I'm selling on my shop as individual cards or as a pack of 4 designs. Grab them before they go!!
My friend James Trustler is a great scenic photographer in Northampton and took this beautiful picture of a Snowdrop on a warm spring morning. I thought it would be rude not to add a little magic to it as my daughters love fairies!
So pleased to be helping design a new mascot for Redwell Primary School in Wellingborough. As part of the their school 'values' promotion a new mascot character design will be used to help illustrate and demonstrate these core values to the pupils, staff and parent of the school.
To enable the school to get involved we thought it would be a great opportunity for pupils and parents to submit their ideas for the mascot based around a small child of primary school age. The school staff along with myself intend to choose some of these designs and turn them into a School Mascot Character design to promote throughout the school and in their literature.
Watch this space for more coming soon.
I'm always being pulled to new animated movies by my kids and to be fair I actually quite enjoy them. Disney Pixar's Inside out was no exception. Great story, fantastic animation and amazing character development. I decided to do a quick movie of me drawing Joy, the main character.
